Description

The workshop aims to help scientists reflect on their evolving roles and responsibilities, viewing an academic career as a consciously designed role portfolio.

Module 1: Identity - Which scientist do I choose to be?

The first part of the workshop will focus on:

  • Scientist identities beyond excellence myths 
  • Values, motives, and personal definitions of success 
  • Identity clarification
  • Role narratives vs. inherited scripts
  • “What I stand for / What I no longer optimize for”

Output: Personal Scientist Identity Statement
 

Module 2: Roles - From single role to responsibility portfolio 

The second part of the workshop will focus on:

  • Role portfolios and implicit expectations 
  • Explicit vs. implicit expectations
  • Role conflicts and overload patterns: Research, leadership, teaching, service, administration, transfer
  • Role mapping (current vs. desired)
  • Responsibility ownership analysis

Output: Role Portfolio Map and Stop-Doing List


Trainer

Dr. ès sc. habil. Alexander Schiller was a DFG Heisenberg fellow and Junior Professor for inorganic chemistry at the University of Jena (Germany). Since 2016 he is a full-time trainer and certified coach.
