Description

Applicants will, if the proposal is successful, become Principal Investigators in a scientific project leading themselves and possibly leading a team of researchers. Thus, competencies for a responsible leadership are key.

Principal investigators (PIs) play a central and multidimensional role in the planning, execution, and completion of scientific research projects. To this end, it is important for the PI to develop a personal leadership identity. Beyond technical expertise, the PI is responsible for scientific leadership, resource management, team development and compliance with ethical and institutional standards.

Raising awareness and reflection upon personal competencies and weaknesses regarding research and leadership and gaining more confidence in these competencies is paramount. A set of tools to manage expectations and deal with success as well as failure is an important prerequisite.

The module will address the following questions /aims:

  • How do I see myself as a PI, as a leader?
  • What are my values being a leader, leading a team?
  • What can be expected of me as a leader?
  • What do I expect of the members of my team?
  • How can I strengthen my self confidence and resilience in order to deal with failure in a healthy, mature manner?

The participants will:

  • Reflect upon their mindsets and attitudes to become the principal investigator of their own projects.
  • Become aware of their responsibility as a PI.
  • Become aware of and strengthen their self confidence.
  • Develop an inner attitude towards expectations and failure.
