Applicants will, if the proposal is successful, become Principal Investigators in a scientific project leading themselves and possibly leading a team of researchers. Thus, competencies for a responsible leadership are key.
Principal investigators (PIs) play a central and multidimensional role in the planning, execution, and completion of scientific research projects. To this end, it is important for the PI to develop a personal leadership identity. Beyond technical expertise, the PI is responsible for scientific leadership, resource management, team development and compliance with ethical and institutional standards.
Raising awareness and reflection upon personal competencies and weaknesses regarding research and leadership and gaining more confidence in these competencies is paramount. A set of tools to manage expectations and deal with success as well as failure is an important prerequisite.

Prof. Dr. Annette Kolb has conducted research in Germany and abroad for twenty years. Since 2014, she has been a consultant and trainer for academics and, in particular, early-career researchers, focusing on effective and strategic career planning. Among other things, she provides coaching for research groups on behalf of the “Deutsche Hochschulverband”.
