Starting as a postdoc, junior group leader or junior professor, it is usually expected to supervise doctoral candidates. Supervision, however, is one of the tasks that are so „normal“ in academia that we quite often neglect to further explain and prepare for it: „Everybody knows what supervision is, so we don’t need to talk about it.“ As a result, researchers who start supervising quite often feel left on their own. This four-module series addresses the different aspects of supervision and helps participants gain the skills - and the confidence - to supervise well. In this seminar we teach you how to combine these two abilities.

They examine how to shape the direction and organisation of a group, clarify roles and responsibilities, delegate effectively and adapt their leadership behaviour to different people and situations.

Entscheidend ist darüber hinaus, dass Forschungsfrage und Forschungsziel klar herausgearbeitet und kommuniziert werden.

AI assistants can be a structured planning partner - helping you step back, see your project from the outside, and catch what's easy to miss from inside your own week-to-week work. This session focuses on turning that into concrete planning practice: assessing priorities with an additional more objective perspective, planning realistic and literature-based timelines, reading your stakeholder landscape, tracking how a project is actually going, and preparing for what could go wrong before it does.

Wenn die inhaltlichen Eckpunkte eines Antrags geklärt sind, geht es darum, den eigentlichen Antragstext auszuarbeiten. In diesem Workshop geht es darum, in die konkrete Ausarbeitung und ins Schreiben des Antrags einzusteigen. Dabei werden verschiedene Schreibmethoden ausprobiert, die zu ersten Rohtexten und Drafts führen und den Übergang von der inhaltlichen Konzeption zum ersten Antragstext unterstützen. Ziel des Workshops ist es, den Schreibprozess für Drittmittelanträge systematisch zu beginnen und konkrete Textgrundlagen für die weitere Ausarbeitung zu schaffen.

A competitive grant proposal depends on the same thing good research planning does: an accurate, external view of where you actually stand - what's genuinely known, whether the addressed gap is relevant and competitive, and how your argument and narrative will convince the reviewers. This session applies that more objective external perspective directly to grant writing -using AI assistants to systematically uncover the unknown unknowns in your own proposal,  from the literature gap you're claiming to the project management of your grant application up to the reviewers who will judge it.

Der letzte große Schritt ist es, den Antrag in eine finale Form zu bringen und beim Drittmittelgeber einzureichen. Dieser Workshop vermittelt Strategien und Methoden, die bei der Fertigstellung des Antrags helfen und dabei wesentliche Kriterien für den Antragserfolg berücksichtigen. Es werden klassische wie auch KI-gestützte Schreib- und Überarbeitungswerkzeuge genutzt, um Antragstexte unter Berücksichtigung der Anforderungen von Gutachter*innen und Förderinstitutionen zu finalisieren. Der Workshop bietet die Möglichkeit, eigene Antragstexte weiterzuentwickeln.

Doctoral supervisors need to establish clear and reliable working relationships, support high-quality and feasible doctoral projects and adapt their approach as researchers develop greater responsibility and independence. The workshop supports participants in developing a more reflective and adaptable approach to doctoral supervision. It examines how supervisors can clarify roles and expectations, support doctoral projects and research progress, adapt structure and support as researchers develop, and respond constructively to difficult supervisory situations within the relevant institutional framework.
