Description

Doctoral supervisors need to establish clear and reliable working relationships, support high-quality and feasible doctoral projects and adapt their approach as researchers develop greater responsibility and independence. 

The workshop supports participants in developing a more reflective and adaptable approach to doctoral supervision. It examines how supervisors can clarify roles and expectations, support doctoral projects and research progress, adapt structure and support as researchers develop, and respond constructively to difficult supervisory situations within the relevant institutional framework.

The interactive workshop will equip you with:

  • Understanding Your Supervisory Role: Clarifying responsibilities, standards and the institutional framework.
  • Building Effective Supervisory Relationships: Creating clarity, reliability and shared ways of working.
  • Supporting the Doctoral Project: Maintaining research quality, feasibility and steady progress
  • Developing Independence through Adaptive Supervision: Adapting structure, support, questioning and feedback as researchers develop.
  • Addressing Difficult Supervisory Situations: Clarifying responses, professional boundaries and support options.

The workshop begins with an individual digital preparation phase (approx. 2 hours), with additional optional activities.

 

Trainer

Dr. Thomas Koch is an experienced trainer, consultant and coach specialising in research leadership, research funding and research careers. Trained as a physical chemist, he spent more than ten years in research in the UK and Switzerland before moving into senior research management roles at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and LMU Munich.
